The conflict between the United States and Iran has reached a critical juncture, with both nations engaged in a series of escalating attacks. On Saturday, the US military reported the death of a service member in northern Iraq, following an Iranian attack. This incident occurred just a day after an attack on a base in Jordan resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and left another missing. The US Central Command (Centcom) stated that the latest casualty was due to a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone, which also injured another service member.
Casualties and Infrastructure Attacks
The US death toll in the conflict has now reached 17, following the declaration of an American Navy pilot missing earlier this month as dead. In Iran, at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes over the past three weeks, according to the Iranian health ministry.
As the attacks continued on Sunday, Iranian media reported that an under-construction nuclear power plant in Darkhoveyn and Qeshm Island had been struck overnight. The UN’s nuclear watchdog called for restraint, noting that the site was in the very early stages and contained no nuclear material during its last visit. Three Iranian missiles were later shot down by Jordan’s military, with a fourth falling in a remote area.
International Responses and Diplomatic Tensions
Jordan summoned Iran’s charges d’affaires in Amman to demand an immediate end to what the foreign ministry called unjustified and blatant Iranian attacks. Israel’s military reported launching interceptors toward missile debris to prevent impact within Israeli territory, with interceptor fragments identified near Eilat but no damage or injuries reported.
The Gulf Cooperation Council, an alliance including Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, accused Tehran of targeting civilian infrastructure, calling it a violation of international law. Iran, in turn, accused the US of striking bridges, an airport, and a train station earlier in the week, to which Washington responded that it had targeted only military infrastructure.
The Collapse of the Ceasefire
The preliminary ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran, struck in June, collapsed less than a month after it began. President Donald Trump declared the agreement over on 8 July, citing repeated breaches by Iran. Late on Saturday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei stated that America’s repeated breaches had laid bare the utter worthlessness and lack of credibility of the US president’s signature.
